Historic Highlights in Downtown Brockville

Downtown Brockville is a treasure trove of history, where each building tells a unique story of the city’s rich past. Let’s explore three notable establishments that seamlessly blend heritage with modern charm.

The Crow’s Nest Apothecary

Located at 62 King Street West, The Crow’s Nest Apothecary is a haven for those seeking metaphysical and holistic offerings. While the apothecary itself is a recent addition, the building’s history dates back to 1867 when it became home to Steacy The Jeweller. Founded by Thomas Boyd Steacy in 1860, Steacy’s was celebrated as the oldest retail business in Brockville by 1962 and the second oldest jewellery business in Canada. Visitors to The Crow’s Nest can still admire the original Steacy’s display cases, a testament to the building’s storied past. (The Crow’s Nest Apothecary Closed August 2024) This building is currenly vacant and up for sale.

Richard’s Coffeehouse

At 234 King Street West stands Richard’s Coffeehouse, nestled within the Nehemiah Seaman House, the oldest stone structure in Brockville, built in 1816. Over the years, this building has been a blacksmith shop, a saddle and harness business, a confectionery and bakery, a dairy bar, and even witnessed a gun battle. Today, it offers a cozy atmosphere for patrons to enjoy freshly roasted coffee and homemade food, continuing its legacy as a community gathering spot.

Tait’s Fresh Start

Established in 1908, Tait’s Fresh Start, originally known as Tait’s Bakery, is located at 31 King Street West. Founded by John Tait, a former baker for Queen Victoria, this family-run bakery has been serving Brockville and the Thousand Islands for over a century. Visitors can still appreciate historical features like the former freight elevator and the original tin ceiling, which hold over a century’s worth of Brockville’s history.
